OUR MISSION
Create opportunity and access for all artists to participate in community theatre activities.
Facilitate conversations which result in positive theatrical experiences.
Connect artists and production companies to build community & enable creative exchanges.
Empower our community to learn, evolve, engage and grow together.
Let’s bridge the gap together…
At Conscious Casting we can recognise the gap in our Amateur Theatre stages to positively reflect diversity of all marginalised communities. This includes Indigenous, Bla(c)k and people of colour; LGBTQIA+; Trans and Gender diverse; Disabled or with a disability; Neurodiverse and body diverse. However the gap is simply not one that can be filled by sheer luck but by consistency and hard work.
We offer guidance on how production companies can operate in a more conscious manner. We also facilitate safe, open and diverse conversations, especially in audition rooms, production meetings, foyers and on any social media platform. Through this we support not just the artists but the companies in collaboration with us.
There is a history of misrepresentation within our community and the outcome has led to even more difficulty finding appropriate artists/casts for certain projects. Conscious Casting will approach each project with the pure definition of our company, which is to take into consideration an artist’s skin colour, heritage, body shape, gender and disabilities. This will be applied into every step of the project especially when searching for talent.
We want to enable the groundwork for each company that will over time eliminate the need for “colour blind” casting and foster conscious casting. We want to champion change by advocating and supporting both artists and companies.
While maintaining professionalism, we aim to provide safe, inclusive environments that are appealing to all artists. This is facilitated by discussing alternate ways of working when auditioning and casting but also identifying any opportunities for process improvement.
